About this blog
Hello everyone! Thanks for tuning in. I am setting up this blog as a way to keep in touch with anyone interested in my research (in academia, in the involved communities, friends, family). I hope to use it as a space to pick through the tangled mass of information currently crawling in my brain from my readings and primary research. I strongly encourage anyone to post comments. I have found that some of the most interesting developments in my thinking and research have taken place in the course of my daily conversations with people about the meaning and role of sustainability and sustainable development. Unfortunately, after a few days the details of these conversations fade, leaving only a general sense that my research direction or focus has shifted ever so slightly. In Latour-speak, this is my “third notebook” that allows me to better track the twists and turns of research. And in giving credit where it is due, I have borrowed the idea of using a blog as my third notebook from my friend and fellow MPhil colleague/conspirator, Eelke Kraak.

Hey Alyssa! I don’t know if you know this, but I’m working on a PhD in Environmental Social Science and I think our research is linked in some interesting ways. Too much to leave on a blog comment, but we should connect over ermail at some point!
Hey Alyssa – Long time no talk. Hope everything is going well. Sounds like some really interesting stuff you are working on. This may be a little off of your subject, but You should look into Polyface Farms, they have some really interesting ideas about farming the idea that to be sustainable, you must keep things local. Everything on the farm works together in amazing ways. Michal Pollen also talks about them in his book, “The omnivore’s dilemma”. Its is on the agriculture side of things, but very interesting stuff.
Alyssa, sounds like you are up to some wonderfully interesting stuff! I was curious what you were up to when you weren’t playing rugby, traveling around, and wearing fancy dresses. I like the idea of a research blog- it seems a good way to keep writing on research related topics. I like the geographic questions related to intentional communities. I know there are a few around here, but from what I’ve heard they have a different culture than their northern California counter-parts.
I’ll have to tell you about my research sometime. I’m over my head in interviews, GIS, and focus groups related to the conflict over water in the Klamath Basin. It has been fascinating- also along the lines of balancing economic, social (add social justice into that) and environmental. Its made me conceptualize “sustainability” as a dynamic equilibrium rather than a bullseye.
Keep up the good work! Your a great inspiration!
